Unlock the Secret: This Miracle Molecule Transforms Mental Health in Weeks
Written and edited by Sarah Bonza MD. MPH, FAAFP, DipABLM, NBC-HWC
In our continuous quest at Bonza Health to deepen our understanding of mental health, especially in relation to depression, it's essential to explore the biochemistry of our brains. A fascinating aspect of this exploration is the role of various cofactors in neurotransmitter production. Researchers have uncovered complex interactions between cofactors and mood, highlighting key elements like MTHF (activated folic acid) and SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine).
The Building Blocks: MTHF and SAMe
MTHF, the active form of folic acid, plays a crucial role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Similarly, SAMe, a compound formed from the amino acid methionine and ATP, acts as a vital methylator in the brain. The synthesis of SAMe is dependent not only on methionine but also on B12 and folate, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to supplementation.
SAMe: A Closer Look
SAMe has garnered attention for its potential benefits in treating depression, particularly in patients who have not responded to conventional SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). In a 6-week study involving 73 individuals, those treated with SAMe in addition to their SSRIs showed significant improvements in response and remission rates according to the Hamilton Depression Scale (36% and 25% respectively) compared to those given a placebo (17% and 11% respectively) (Papakostas GI, et al., 2010).
Recommended Dosing of SAMe
The dosing of SAMe can range from 400 to 1600 mg daily. However, as it can cause nausea and gastrointestinal disturbances in some individuals, a gradual approach is recommended. Starting with a dose of 200 mg twice daily for the first day, incrementally increasing to 400 mg twice daily on the third day, and eventually reaching the full dosage of 800 mg twice daily after 10 days if needed, can help mitigate side effects.
Integrating Cofactors in Mental Health Management
Understanding and utilizing these cofactors in neurotransmitter production can be a game-changer in managing depression, especially for those who have not found relief with standard treatments. At Bonza Health, we emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach, considering not only medication but also the nutritional and biochemical needs of our patients.
Incorporating elements like MTHF, SAMe, B12, and folate into treatment plans, alongside lifestyle and dietary modifications, can provide a more rounded and effective strategy in combating depression.
Moving Forward with Informed Care
As we continue to explore the frontiers of mental health treatment, it's imperative to remain informed and open to the potentials of biochemical interventions. By understanding and harnessing the power of cofactors like SAMe in neurotransmitter production, we can offer new hope and solutions to those on their journey to mental wellness.
At Bonza Health, as part of our b-calm protocol, we recommend Blisphora® by Metagenics a revolutionary formula featuring clinically effective levels of SAMe (s-adenosyl-L-methionine). This powerful formula combines significant levels of body-ready folate (the next generation of folate with improved bioavailability) and vitamin B12 (as easy-to-absorb methylcobalamin) to support SAMe metabolism, methylation, and healthy neurotransmitter synthesis for a balanced mood.
